Design Matters: Make History!

July 29, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

Youth Olympic Games 2010 Logo LaunchTILT is estatic to be a part of the Youth Olympic Games 2010! As official photographers, we were happy to witness the launch of the Singapore 2010 logo competition for YOG 2010.

We believe strongly that the direction is right. The logo competition is for any members of the public to submit a design. This is regardless of nationality or design experience.

This is inline with what TILT believes as well. In similar terms, this blog is created such that the general public or anyone who is interested in design can read and be more educated and in this way, perhaps we can play our small little part in assisting Singapore to become a design hub. So, why hesitate? Make History! Have your say in the first Youth Olympic Games!

I want a New Annual Report

July 25, 2008 by kimo · Leave a Comment

The same statement that is transmitted to all staff of various levels. At the receiving end, all staff gets the same message. However, the message might be interpreted differently at each level, from marketing officers to managers and higher management.

To a {en:marketing|marketing} officer, this might mean looking at a new design that will “not look the same as previous years“. A design with high impact to match its importance and to show to their manager that they are doing a good job.

For the manager, it could be a design that has no mistakes and that the cost is minimised and the work of the design company maximised. They can then report budget savings and a lot of different versions where they can present to the higher management to show how they can get the most value out of a decreased budget. After all, they are project managers and this is a good way to demonstrate their project management skills.

For the higher management, they probably just want to get it over and done with.

Design Matters: Design R&D Grants

July 24, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

You have a brilliant idea and you are hampered by the lack of funds? This is a situation where TILT found ourselves in occasionally. It certainly is frustrating and we are glad that with the latest grant available, this is a situation that all designers / design houses will probably no longer face.

Design R&D is a catalytic programme to explore new design paradigms, creating new design knowledge, processes and applications through design research and development, forecasting future needs and spinning new industries. The programme is synchronised with Singapore’s aim to compete in the emergent knowledge economy, to position Singapore as a magnet for exciting collaboration, consortia, unique R&D projects, and a vibrant hive of creative tinkering, experiments, simulations and prototypes.

Interesting? We certainly think so. Find out more on their website.

Every Step Counts

At the official launch of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2008, Singapore Sports Council announced its official charity partner- Community Chest.

Through the Run for a Cause programme and donations from the public, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon and Community Chest hope to raise $500,000 in support of 7 charities. Every step counts in making a difference to the lives of the less fortunate.

As the official photographer for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2008, we are glad that we are involved in this event. Here at TILT, we had always believed in giving back to the society. Through the years, we have done our bit in giving back to the society. We have volunteered for events such as Singapore Streets Festival, MILK Run as well as for organisations such as Kampung Senang. Presently, we are doing volunteer work for Singapore Disability Sports Council. Knowing that our work is aligned to our belief give us great satisfaction.

For all who intends to join the SCSM 2008, we urge you to take that first step now!

I Love My Job!

July 20, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

There are many numerous photography competitions that happen annually. Here at TILT, this competition is one which we think is one which everyone should join!

I Love my Job!” is a photography competition organised by Jobstreet. You may think that there is not much difference between this competition and other competitions. The theme is perhaps a little bit easier for you to submit a photograph. Besides this, it is pretty much similar to all other competitions. Now, this is what we feel. The theme is simple and most importantly, it allows you to take a step back and look at your job from a different perspective. Finally, you can seek the small little details that make you happier and allows you to appreciate your job more. This is very much similar to how TILT functions. We believe in taking a step back and looking at things from a different perspective. In this way, the way you function and the way you look at things can then be very different!

Now, back to the competition, all you need to do is to submit a digital photogaphy with “a caption” describing why you love your job! The picture could be one of you at your workstation, in your office, together with your office mates or whatever you feel that best portrays the contest theme. Participation is FREE OF CHARGE! You only need to be a JobStreet.com member. Closing date for this contest is 15 August 2008.

Design Matters: 2008 Creative Freelancer Conference

July 15, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

We are all aware that in the design industry, there will always be freelancers. They provide pros and cons of course. While the cost is lower for them, with that, there are limitations which the client can enjoy. These limitations can be slower response time, poorer service, limited knowledge and others.

With these limitations, does that mean the end to freelancers then? The answer is no. Can freelancers then go on to form what we call “Solopreneurs”? The answer is no as well, especially when the 2008 Creative Freelancer Conference (CFC) is here. As part of TILT’s effort to share and educate the general public or anyone interested in design, we urge all freelancers to shrug off the freelancer tag and to embark on a Solopreneur career by joining this conference.

This conference is suitable for freelancers in any design matters. It can be in design, photography, illustration, copywriting, etc. or even if you’re just thinking about it. This is not a conference to be missed.

Presented by HOW and Marketing Mentor, the Creative Freelancer Conference has brought together expert speakers—all successful solopreneurs themselves—to help one build a strong and healthy business. From crafting watertight contracts to becoming a marketing machine, CFC covers all the business aspects of being a freelancer.

This conference is definitely worth the investment. Pamper yourself on a holiday in Chicago from August 27 – 29 and learn how to do it right the first time without the need to learn through the typical trial and error method.

Design Matters: why trademark?

July 12, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

As we are designing logos for our clients, there are times where TILT will advise the client to trademark their logos / tagline.

In Singapore, you will need to contact Rivin if you wish to have a trademark application. As stated on their website

Why register a Trademark?
A registered Trademark bestows the exclusive use of that name, and provides for its owner the capability:

  • To offer licenses and franchises.
  • To be differentiated from competitors.
  • To be protected from third parties using an equal or similar name, exercising the legal actions that correspond.
  • To protect the Internet domain name.
  • To impede others attempting to register similar trademarks.
  • To have priority over third parties wanting to register their trademarks, in countries which do not require registration.
  • If the benefits are this good, why does TILT not advise our clients all the time instead? The reason is simple. Trademarks are probably the cheapest intellectual property asset to protect. In this fast moving industry, market movement is very constant and there may be a need for repositioning, rebranding. Why spend the money on developing a trademark portfolio until you have developed your marketing strategy and ensured that it is working and future-proof?

Once things are about to be stablise, the time will then be right to cement your ground with your branding.

    Milliners Parade

    July 11, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

TILT were the official photographer for the Singapore leg of Victoria Racing Club, Melbourne’s annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour. Besides showing the Emirates Melbourne Cup Trophy in their tour of countries, there was another purpose in this stop in Singapore. The season, style and fashion of the Milliners.

A little bit of history on the Fashions on the Field. The Victoria Racing Club was first was instigated in 1962. It was an attempt to ‘woo more women to the races’. Through the years, Fashions on the Field has undergone many developments. The basic premise of the Fashions on the Field at Flemington competition remains the same – an opportunity for the fashion industry to showcase its wares and for women and now men to indulge in their ‘passion for fashion’.

Held at St. Regis Hotel, the Milliners Parade proved to be a dazzling display of hats and bags. With the Emirates Singapore Derby happening this weekend, the Milliners Parade provided a sneak preview of how the horse-racing world in Singapore can be in the future!

    Simply STYLO!

    July 10, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

TILT is honoured to be the official photographer for the inaugural STYLO Fashion Grand Prix Press Conference. In what promises to be Singapore’s best excuse to dress up and network, this STYLO Fashion Grand Prix forms the eighth and possibily the most glamorous facet of the official Formula One weekend social circuit which runs from 26th September 2008.

The press conference, on 10th July 2008, held at Mercedes-Benz Centre provided a sneak preview of the glamour, glitz and glory that will be held at the STYLO Fashion Grand Prix on 26th September 2008. With leading Asian impresario Dick Lee conceptualising the event and Singapore Tourism Board supporting this event, there are only 2 words which we, at TILT, can discribe the adrenaline…”Simply STYLO!”

Design Matters: the celebration that stops a nation!

    July 9, 2008 by aoelof · Leave a Comment

When TILT first came across the tagline “the celebration that stops a nation!”, we were thinking “My God, this is a great tagline!” Its simplicity leaves it linger in your mind, its directness paints you the perfect picture, its simple pun provides the answer to the Melbourne Cup Carnival. We glanced at the tagline and we saw that it has been trademarked! Great move, we should say! Why? We shall leave that to another day.

For related post, read “Why Trademark?

Now, back to the tagline “the celebration that stops a nation!”. TILT first came across this when we were invited to quote by the Victoria Racing Club, Melbourne. They are on their annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour and Singapore is one of their stop this year round. The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour was developed in 1993 to take ‘the Cup back to the people’ and to provide local communities with an opportunity to experience first hand, the cultural and social significance of the Melbourne Cup, and to celebrate the heroes connected with its rich 146-year history.

To date, the Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy has travelled more than 100,000 kilometres and visited more than 100 regional and metropolitan destinations across Australia and New Zealand, since the first tour was conducted in 2003.

TILT had been handpicked by the Victoria Racing Club to do a photo call for them. We are thrilled that a company in Australia can actually find out about us!
